Oh, That File

February 18th, 2010 · Comments Off

I’ve been having some fun with Exchange Server 2007 SP1. Installing this beast on to a Windows Server 2008 R2 is an adventure, made even more adventurous by these kinds of errors:

This error comes right at the start of the installation, after the so-called “pre-requisites” have been met, supposedly. That’s right, the installation process [...]

Exchange Performance Troubleshooting

February 11th, 2010 · Comments Off

I dont know why, but I cant easily find information about Exchange (and OS) server performance and when I do, its likely to be less than readable. Microsoft must pay some of the driest technical writers this side of Tucson.
The folks at msexchangeteam.com have posted an article which contains quite a goodly number of resources [...]

Spell I-D-I-O-T-I-C

Comes the news from Nasir Ali (Exchange Escalation Engineer, the poor bastard) that Exchange Server 2007 SP2 setup fails if all domain controllers are running Windows Server 2008 R2.
The error is as follows:
[ERROR] Cannot find at least one domain controller running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later in domain ‘DC=DCName,DC=com,DC=DCName’. This could be [...]

Outlook Anywhere, XP, and ISA: Oh My!

May 15th, 2009 · 1 Comment

For the longest time, it was a burr embedded in my side.
With ISA servers standing guard in front of our Exchange Server 2007 installation and having a UCC (or SAN) SSL certificate installed, Outlook (2003 and 2007) users on Windows XP were having the hardest time getting access to Exchange via Outlook Anywhere.
As it turns [...]

Wrongheaded

April 27th, 2009 · Comments Off

I was just reading that Microsofts research lab contains as many PhDs to rival many university environments with 850.
Yeah, I thought, it has to take that many PhDs to really muck things up. Snarky, I know, but Ive been sorely provoked as the Bard said.
Were currently in the midst of migrations, attempting to combine several [...]

Remove The Connector, Bradley!

March 19th, 2008 · Comments Off

Once upon a time, a newbie Exchange administrator installed a Groupwise connector so that his Groupwise users can continue to receive email as the transition away from Novell Groupwise to Exchange.
As it turns out, that connector was only in use for a few days only and now, he doesn’t need this connector anymore.  So pray [...]

Leaping E2K7

March 3rd, 2008 · Comments Off

From an EHLO blog posting last week:
We have been made aware that some of our Exchange 2007 customers have been experiencing the following issue today:
When trying to make certain configuration changes such as new-mailbox or enable-mailbox, certain set of our customers would receive the following error:
"The Exchange server address list service failed to respond. [...]

Teehee

My colleagues have long insisted that Microsoft is deliberate in complicating its technologies then providing little to no documentation because it wants to keep those who take its courses employed.
After all, who but the most patient, astute and perhaps masochistic could persevere through the blinding sandstorm of everyday Microsoft operations complete with moronic error messages [...]

Outlook Passwords

January 14th, 2008 · Comments Off

For various reasons, including security, many of our outlying divisions aren’t part of our Active Directory forest although they use our Exchange server.
This puts us in the unenviable position of using RPC over (secure) HTTP.  The issue is passwords.  These gentle folk have two: one for their local AD and, when they open up [...]
