Outlook Passwords

January 14th, 2008 · Comments Off

For various reasons, including security, many of our outlying divisions aren’t part of our Active Directory forest although they use our Exchange server.
This puts us in the unenviable position of using RPC over (secure) HTTP.  The issue is passwords.  These gentle folk have two: one for their local AD and, when they open up [...]

FantaSMS

January 14th, 2008 · Comments Off

I’m finally getting around to implementing SMS 2003 even though it’s been supplanted by a recent version.
SMS is a strange little beast, skulking in the background of operations at once mischievous and helpful. Mostly mischievous. I’m using Pro SMS 2003 by Rod Kruetzfeld as a reference. I really like this series [...]

Network PST Files

April 4th, 2007 · Comments Off

According to this bit of news, storing pst files on a network drive is a VERY BAD THING™.  Fine, what then?  We store our users archived email on a network drive and we haven’t had too many problems, I wonder if that article covers this as well?  If not, since we don’t have any kind [...]

Virtualization

March 2nd, 2007 · Comments Off

Returned from a useful meeting of the Boise Area VMUG (VMWare Users Group) at Blue Cross of Idaho (BCI).  These guys at BCI have done such a great job of running the last two meetings I attended, I gotta say thanks for Shad at BCI.
If there’s one thing today’s meeting has taught me it’s that [...]

DST-mania

February 21st, 2007 · Comments Off

Many of you know there is a change-a-coming in the Daylight Saving Time (DST) set up for March.  Microsoft has thoughtfully made the following webcast available to help us.
Which is all well and good, but Keeerist, why do we have to make additional changes to Exchange mailbox calendars, etc., etc.?  Huh?  Why can’t one magical [...]

OWA-y?

January 30th, 2007 · Comments Off

I just got a call from a customer complaining about a 500 error on OWA.  At first, by rote, I thought she’s been putting in the wrong URL and so, I walked her entering the proper URL and she was still reporting the same error.  Just to make sure, I logged on to her account with my [...]

Office 2007: better?

January 5th, 2007 · Comments Off

Ugh, I foresee  another disaster waiting in the wings.
For starters, a bunch of us “techies” have installed the latest–and supposedly greatest–Office suite.  It installed easily but Outlook opens with a baby blue theme, which we all uniformly hate.  So, dear reader, what do you think one would need do to change this?
We tried everything.  Using [...]

Phantom NDR’s

October 18th, 2006 · Comments Off

Ben Winzenz, an Exchange MVP, blogs about the weird issue of missing Outlook delegates.  In effect, if a delegatee’s account no longer exists through deletion of the account and mailbox, Outlook doesn’t automatically remove the delegate (you know, because that would make too much sense!) so any meeting messages generate a strange NDR from the recently “deceased” [...]

OneNote synchronicity

October 17th, 2006 · Comments Off

Big fan of Microsoft’s OneNote (and Evernote also, by the way).  Chris Pratley has a good blog entry about using OneNote on two or more machines.  Very handy to know.

Steganography

Of sorts…  From here, I find it is possible to embed a rar file inside a jpg.  Pretty neat, don’t you think?
